Who is the Best of the Cheap Pedal brands – What is the best cheap pedal you can get!
Introduction
Shall we talk about cheap pedals? Not just affordable, but cheap! There are many cheap pedal brands out there, lots of people selling similar kinds of pedals at a similar kind of price. However, who is the best of all the cheap pedal brands? Is there someone you should look at? Is there a pedal brand that is punching well above its price point? Should you even purchase cheap pedals? I will go through all of this!
Below I go through three of the brands which I think represent great value for money and would be considered affordable and cheap. I will go from most expensive to cheapest. Explaining why I think they are good. What they offer and also any of the downsides from them! So let me get started with a brand I think we have all heard and most likely own at least one of their pedals!
Boss Pedals
How could we talk about cheap pedal brands and affordable pedal brands without mentioning the king of affordable pedals! Boss Pedals! They are famous for their high quality. So much so that they are famous and kind of have a little inside joke about how strong they are and how they are built like tanks.
I have reviewed two Boss Pedals, the first one is their Waza CE-2w chorus pedal (Review Here). Which I would agree that it isn’t really affordable; however, it is still good value. The next is their basic BD-2 Blues Driver (Review Here). This was an incredible pedal, so amazing that it has been on my pedalboard ever since I reviewed it!
Most Boss pedals sell for around £60-£90. I can honestly say that you only need to buy it once! Along these lines, you can always find them online for even better value! I have bought many second-hand Boss pedals, some of which were very beat up and in “rubbish” condition. However, they were perfect and played and sounded amazing!
Tone City Pedals
Tone City pedals started as a small brand but have had huge success rather quickly! They have made some really unique pedals and collaborated with some great guitarists! Although they have made some larger pedals, their main pedals are compact, small, and affordable. Lots of overdrives but various other effects like delays, chorus, flanger, and compressors. You could happily make a full pedalboard with just Tone City pedals; it also wouldn’t take up much space either!
There is a full review of the Tone City Durple on the site (Review Here), which is their light overdrive pedal in collaboration with Danish Pete from Andertons. I absolutely love this pedal and it is a great light to medium overdrive pedal. I have plenty of their pedals lined up for review!
They are insane value; most of their pedals are between £40-£50, with the dual pedals being slightly more. They are great value, sound amazing, and feel very solid and well built! If you want a giggable and sturdy pedal, then I would 100% recommend Tone City! You can check them at the link below!
"What I love about Demon FX is if you want to try out an FX pedal of some kind, then you can try them out without having to drop too much money on them!"
DemonFX Pedals
My last brand I want to mention is Demon FX! A Chinese pedal manufacturer that had a reputation as a clone builder but has started to build “different” pedals now! All their pedals are based on famous pedals. They are insane value and are often between £20-£50.
I haven’t reviewed many Demon FX pedals, but I have reviewed their Zero Watt amp! I checked out the DemonFX Simple (Review Here). It was a great unit with some amazing sounds; however, it isn’t flawless and has some pretty big issues! However, those issues will only apply to a small number of people!
What I love about Demon FX is if you want to try out an FX pedal of some kind, then you can try them out without having to drop too much money on them! You can try various famous pedals and see if you like the flavour and sound of them before you might commit to the full-fat one! If you want to check out some of their pedals, you can see a huge selection of them over on Affordaboard websites! I have put their link below!
Conclusion
So that is my top three cheap pedal brands! Hopefully, you have noticed that I have tried to cover a whole range of prices. The term affordable or cheap can have a different definition for different people. However, when I think affordable or cheap, I try to think about anything under £90. Not all cheap pedals are bad, same as not all expensive pedals are good! Maybe that should be my next article!
Have I forgotten any cheap pedal brands? While writing this, I thought of a few other brands. So maybe I will have to do another article going over a few other brands. There are a lot of pedal brands out there now, and they all have various price ranges. However, you have to weigh up how much you will use it, the quality, and the amount you want to spend on a pedal.
