My Thoughts on the NEW Epiphone Futura Series! – A new line up has been released!
Introduction
You may have seen online that Epiphone has just released a new line of guitars! Same shapes as we all know and love but with new specs and some new features! They have called the new line the Epiphone Futura series! I thought I would put together a quick article going through my thoughts on them! There is a lot to talk about but I will do my best to keep it short.
So why don’t I talk about what they are quickly to begin with, then I can go through the standout specs of the line-up? Finally, we can get onto what I think of the line-up and do I think Epiphone has made a huge mistake with the Epiphone Futura series!
Epiphone Futura: What are they?
The Epiphone Futura series is a new line-up of modern guitars that meets the demand of a modern player. They feature specs that haven’t been on other Epiphone models, as well as paint jobs which will be sure to make them stand out! There are seven models in the full line up. A Les Paul, a SG, Flying V, Explorer, RD Custom, and finally an ES-335. They have tried to cover most famous Gibson models.
Epiphone has said that the Epiphone Futura series is aimed at hard rock and metal players, with aims to push the boundaries on what a guitar can do within these genres. However, looking at the specs and the controls, I believe they could be used for a lot more! Speaking of specs, shall I go through the specs quickly and see what they come with as standard, plus the most important thing, the price!
Epiphone Futura: Quick Spec Check
I won’t go into every single detail of the specs, but I will cover some of the highlights that I saw! Starting with the wood and construction!
The body is Mahogany slab with maple cap. The body has weight relief to lighten the guitar. This is paired with a Modern C Shape neck with an ebony fretboard. This is all topped off with a colour-changing, high-gloss paint job. With each model coming in two colours.
What about hardware? Looks like the guitars come with Grover locking tuners and stainless steel frets! A nice little upgrade! Pair this with the new Ignite Humbuckers, which are voiced for high output and high gain, and you have a match made in heaven! You will be able to coil split the pickups as well as make them out of phase. Meaning you have a lot of tones available!
Once this guitar has been built and shipped to your local dealer, you will be able to buy any model for £849. This price includes a soft shell case as well.
Epiphone Futura: My Thoughts
So what do I think of this new Epiphone guitar line-up? To start with, I personally love the finishes on the Epiphone Futura! It is nice to see a company do something a bit punchy and actually modern! The colour shift will be super funky in real life and look amazing in a live context. I can’t wait to see one in person.
Looking at the specs above, I believe they have put their focus in the right place! Stainless steel frets, locking tuners, and weight relief are all things modern guitarists want! Tone, stability, and comfort! The big three things most guitarists actually care about! I think the addition of coil splitting and out-of-phase controls is a big bonus. This will allow players to get a huge array of tones and use the one guitar for a whole range of gigs!
More thoughts on the Epiphany Futura
Considering the specs that these Epiphone Futura’s have, I don’t think they are a bad price! Of course, people will look at £850 and think this is expensive for an Epiphone, but guitars have got more expensive (for many reasons), and these guitars have features which will, and do, push the price up! However, ignoring the awesome paint job, if this is a guitar you feel would be useful to you as a tool, then it is a fantastic price!
My last point I want to make, and it is a pretty big downside for me. I can’t see any left-handed options. I am 95% sure there isn’t. Hopefully, they release some further down the line. However, I don’t think they will. I think this will be a right-handed model only! Which sucks!
With all this in mind, what is my favourite of the new line-up? I think it has to be the Epiphone Futura ES-335 in Dragon Shift! I love the blue and green combo. Super nice and funky! Love it! However, the RD Custom is a close second to this as I have always loved that shape!
Conclusion
That is my initial thought. I am sure more will come out about them once they start hitting shop floors and people start to play them. However, for now I think Epiphone have smashed it with this series! It will be interesting to see if they are better than a vintage Epiphone Les Paul (Review Here).
What are your thoughts on the Epiphone Future series? Could you see yourself buying one? Or are they not for you? Give me a message on Instagram or email us (Contact Page). I really like what Gibson are doing with Epiphone, even more so than what Gibson are doing with Gibson! So excited to see where both companies go!
