Guitar Gear I would never buy or use – What type of things would I NOT buy?

Introduction

This should be a fun article. Guitar gear I would never buy or use! These are going to be items of gear that I would never personally buy or use. Now, I am going to talk about them in a very specific way, so make sure you read into each one. It won’t be as clear cut ad the headline might seem.

I will go through each point and explain what I mean by each one and explain why I would never buy these items. I fully understand that you may think some of these are very nit-picky, and they are! I agree with that. However, I want to try to get some of you to think about gear you might not want to buy or use! So no need to say anything else, let me dive straight into the first one! And it is a big one indeed!

Vintage Guitars

Guitar Gear I would never buy - 1959 Gibson les Paul
This is a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Reissue. This is still £8k (Ish). Still a lot of money but much better than £250k of a real 1959!

When I say vintage guitars, I mean proper vintage guitars that go for 100’s of thousands of pounds! Guitars that tend to end up in a cabinet and not played. I just don’t lust after them like some people do! They tend to have to be looked after, played in a certain way, and almost “babied” so not to break them or damage them! I can honestly say that I would never buy these!

I am also a fan of what modern tech has brought to guitars. They play better and are easier to live with and use consistently! Many brands are out there improving the guitar in small but nice ways! Better cut-out shapes, stronger truss rods, and locking tuners! All these things make living with a guitar easier and more reliable.

Saying all of this, there are a handful of guitars that I do want, like a 1980’s Gibson Les Paul custom. So if I ever saw one of them at a good price, I might think about it. However, I don’t go out looking and shopping for vintage guitars. I wouldn’t ever dream of spending several thousand or hundreds of thousands on them!

Vintage Amps

For me, I don’t see the appeal of vintage amps. One of the reasons is the price! The price of vintage amps has gone through the roof recently. For me, spending that kind of money on something which is worse than a newer amp is wild! People will argue day or night about the sounds, but when you start having to worry about replacing tubes because they won’t be original, that is stress I don’t want to have to deal with! I like to use my amps. Enjoying working with my amps! I don’t want to have to worry about any maintenance or replacing anything!

Another reason I think the way I use amps and my workflow heavily dictate the reason why I don’t have a need for vintage amps. Thanks to the website and how I record demos and videos, having direct outputs and silent recording options is a huge selling point for me. 90% of vintage amps don’t have these features!

Guitar Hardcase

To start with, I have nothing against guitar hard cases! I think they are the best way to protect your instrument! However, they take up a lot of space, they are heavy, and I find them handwork to use and transport in a live setting.

For me, I will always reach for my gig bags when taking a guitar outside the house! A good-quality gig bag will be able to protect your guitar in almost any situation! Plus, they are smaller and easier to store! Unlike most hard cases, they also have several pockets and storage all over the gig bag. So a guitar hard case is another item I would never buy!

Modeller (Live Use)

This may seem like a hypocritical one, why? Well, because I use a Nano Cortex in one of my rigs! However, when I say I wouldn’t use a modeller, I mean I wouldn’t go fully in with a modeller. I wouldn’t ever use something like a Quad Cortex or a Kemper as my whole rig.

This hasn’t got anything to do with sound or morals or anything. The only reason I wouldn’t is because I love gear! I love playing around with pedals and gear, so to me, using a modeller for my entire rig would just get boring! That is why I love the set-up I have currently with a hybrid of the two.

Saying all of that, I would use a modeller in the studio to speed up recording and allow me to have a more efficient workflow! Allow me to play around with dual amp rigs and use various different effects!

Guitar Gear I would never buy - Line 6 Helix!
I couldn't ever see myself using a full modeller live or in rehearsal! I am a big fan of pedals and gear!

Low Quality Guitar Strap

Since purchasing my Lost Soul Leather guitar strap, I don’t see myself ever getting another nylon or low-quality strap again! They are not comfy, of poor quality materials, and unreliable! Whereas when you get a strap made by one person, using the best components, then you know you will get a comfy, hard-wearing, and long-lasting strap!

I am aware that I do go on about this strap! That is just because it is that good! Soft, comfy, and insane quality! Is it cheap? Not at all! Will it last for many, many years? Certainly! If you are serious about your gear and you perform and gig a lot, then I would 100% recommend a Lost Soul Leather strap.
