Gator Double Guitar Bag – You could carry your entire rig with one bag!

Introduction

Time for something a little bit different in this review. Due to my ever-last mission to make my life easier but rig better, I started to look into dual guitar cases. I saw the Mono cases but couldn’t justify the price. That is when I found the Gator Double Guitar bag! This is a Gator gig bag but can store two electric guitars.

This wasn’t a review I was planning on doing, however. I purchased the guitar case and after I used it a few times, I thought it would be worth putting my thoughts together in case anyone else is looking for a dual guitar gig bag! I have always found carrying two guitars a bit of a hassle, but I don’t like only using one! So having a gig bag that can carry both is so helpful! Even more when it is fairly affordable!

So let me first talk about the Gator P-PE E-Guitar case and go through its features and build specs. Then I will go through my thoughts and what I think of it. So what is this case all about?

Gator Double Guitar Case

The Gator G-PG E-Guitar Double Bag is a dual guitar gig bag, aimed at carrying two guitars and all your gear in one bag. It is a highly spec’d gig bag that aims to outperform most other brands. Packed full of features and a spec sheet as long as my arm, there is a lot to talk about with this gig bag. Let’s start on the main selling point!

You can store and carry two guitars in this gig bag. You have a front pouch and a rear pouch. When you have two guitars in the bag, they are stored back to back. They are surrounded by ample microfleece padding. With the extra thick padded walls, both the guitars should be protected.

On the front of the case, you will find five pockets for various things. All of them are a good size and can fit a range of products. Ranging from pedalboards to chargers and strings.

Considering that you can carry two guitars in this case. It is a chunky boy! Fairly thick and it is noticeable when carrying it and also storing it!

More on the Gator Double Guitar bag

Inside the main front pocket, you will find a few extra storage slots. Some of which I haven’t seen on other bags. Firstly, you have some Velcro straps to tie up and manage your cables. You will also find a tablet pouch and a larger pouch for sheet music or a laptop. There are also two smaller pockets that you can put smaller accessories in. A very well-equipped front pouch.

The Gator G-PG E-guitar double bag features semi-detachable shoulder straps. You can unclip them from the bottom of the case. However, they stay attached at the top of the strap.

Inside one of the back pouches is a protective rain cover. This is a poncho that you can put over your gig bag in case you get caught in the rain with it. Protecting your guitars and also your bag! This has its own pocket which is labelled up.

The dry weight of the Gator Double guitar bag is 4.8kg. You can purchase the bag from most music shops for around £166.

What are my thoughts?

The Design

Overall, you can tell that some thought has gone into the design of this guitar bag! They haven’t just taken a standard bag and doubled it up. They have added some extra features! Which is to be expected as Gator is professional at making this kind of gear! All the zips and Velcro seem great quality and should hopefully last a long time! What really impresses me about this double guitar case is the little features they have added; they are all over the bag!

A feature which I love and surprised me is the protective rain cover. I think this is such a nice touch! None of us want our guitars to get wet; however, most of us don’t want our gig bag and cases to get wet either! Having a “built-in” rain cover in its own, easy-to-find pocket is super useful!

I was so happy when I saw that this gig bag had removable shoulder straps! Sometimes when you are carrying a gig bag and not wearing it on your back, the shoulder straps can become a right pain and get in the way! Allowing you to remove them and pack them inside makes carrying the bag easier and also makes storing the bag easier! This is already a large bag (more on that shortly), so removing the shoulder straps makes it a little more compact and tidier! They aren’t fully removable; you can only unclip them at the bottom and tuck them into the back pouch!

Pockets

Not only was I surprised at how many pockets this guitar bag has, but I was also surprised at how usable they were! I have had guitar gig bags before that look like they have a lot of storage, but most of the pockets are small and unusable! The Gator Double guitar bag has plenty of pockets and also has pockets in pockets that can fit a lot of stuff! They are well thought out and easy to get at! The only thing to mention about the pockets is that only the “tablet” pocket has a soft lining! The bigger pocket where you would put a laptop isn’t lined. I actually found myself putting my tablet in the bigger pocket as it was easier to get to because it didn’t have the Velcro flap on it.

"I always get the feeling of it 'not being finished' whenever I open it up."

Ease of Use

Everything you need is easy to get to and open up! Most of the pockets and areas can be opened without interfering with anything else. So overall, once you have the case worked out and packed it how you want it, you should be able to find your way around quickly and get to everything you need.

I will say that the two guitar slots are back to back. Meaning you have to flip the case over to put the second guitar in. This can be a bit awkward and (if you are me) a bit worrying that one of your guitars is resting downwards. However, in my experience this hasn’t caused any issues. I have tried a few other double guitar bags and on those both compartments open from the top. This one doesn’t. Doesn’t sound like a big thing (and it isn’t really) but if both guitars were accessible from the front it would make it a lot easier.

Gator Double - With Guitar in
Plenty of padding inside the case! A super easy way to carry two guitars around in one go!
Gator Double - Inside
The padding is soft and plenty of it. however, it just looks "unfinished". Also I noticed that some of my "standard" shape guitars don't fit in as easy as I think they should!

The Drawbacks

My biggest issue is the inside of the gig bag. The lining is lovely and soft and won’t damage a guitar; however, I always get the feeling of it “not being finished” whenever I open it up. It almost feels like the inside of the case was a second thought! Now, I haven’t had any issues with the case while using it with one or two guitars. However, look at the inside of the gig bag and feel a bit let down! Looks cheap! Will it stop me using the bag? Not at all, and it shouldn’t stop you buying one if you need one, but I just feel Gator could have spent a little bit more effort and made it look a lot better!

Due to the nature of what this Gator Guitar bag is trying to do. It is a big boy! Even empty, it is a large case! However, once you start filling it up and adding all your gear to it, then it does become big. Not only is the Gator Dual Guitar bag big, but it can be weighty! Now, I put two of my guitars in it (a T-Type and a S-Type), both of which are extremely light guitars, and then added my cables, laptop, and other bits and bobs, and I would say it is “heavy”.

More Drawbacks

Another point I want to bring up is the warranty. It is a lifetime warranty, but there are a few things to keep in mind. There are a lot of “ifs and buts” on their website. For example, the warranty is only for the original owner and for current products. If this bag got discontinued, then the warranty would only last for one year after the discontinued date (that is how I understand it).

Final Thoughts

A few final thoughts are that the Gator Double gig bag is a great way to carry two guitars, and however bulky and heavy it might get, it is still better than carrying two guitars in two separate cases! Of course, you won’t get the same protection as a full hard case; however, for those local gigs or someone who doesn’t gig regularly, this could be perfect.

It is worth remembering that this gig bag is designed for “normal” or “standard” guitars. You will not be able to fit a normal bass guitar in here or any extreme-shape guitars (like a Flying V or Explorer). However, they do sell dual guitar gig bags that can fit these types of guitars. You can head over to any of the sites below to find the full range and find the case for you.

Conclusion

So that is my review of the Gator Double guitar case. If you do regular gigs and want to take two guitars, then I would highly recommend this case. It is a fair price for what it is. I have found it amazing and so simple! I am aware there are other brands that do dual guitar cases; however, they tend to be much more expensive. Maybe I will check them out soon and compare!

Gator do a great selection of hard road cases that can carry multiple guitars. I might check one of those out. I like the idea of a case to carry three guitars! If you would like to see that review, then please let me know. That would be aimed more at people that do tours and lots of travelling!

I did buy this bag myself; however, if you want to purchase one for yourself (or anything in fact), then you can use my affiliate link below. This won’t cost you anything extra, but I do get a small commission. It helps support the site and channel and allows me to keep bringing reviews to you.
